2 The Roman Empire In 27 B.C. Octavian told the Senate that he had restored the republic and would resign as sole ruler. The Senate turned him down and gave him several titles.

3 Rule of Augustus Octavian took the title of Augustus or “revered one” He was the 1 st Emperor of Rome Augustus’s policies lasted and brought about 200 years of peace.

4 The Rule of Augustus Augustus held the offices of: Consul Tribune High Priest Senator All at the same time

5 Rule of Augustus Augustus refused to be crowned emperor. Why?- Most Romans would not accept 1 person rule unless it “looked” like a republic. What did Augustus keep in place? Assemblies, government officials of the republic

8 Pax Romana Augustus ruled Rome for 41 years. He was able to bring Peace to Rome. His 3 accomplishments that benefited Rome: Romans had a sense of Patriotism Made Roman citizenship available to people in provinces Reorganized the government
