ELEMENTS OF DESIGN Floral Design Mrs. Henderson

What are the elements of design? Line Form & Shape Space & Depth Texture

Line Line provides a pathway for the eyes to follow throughout a composition, which increases rhythm and visual enjoyment. There are three methods for using Line. –Actual line: sets up the skeleton of a design and provide structure for the arrangement. They are delineated. –Implied line: provides a pathway for the eye to follow using repetition, but no line actually exists. –Psychic line: mentally connecting two objects to feel as though a line exists.

Line There are four types of Line direction. –Vertical line: causes continuous eye movement from the focal area up to the top edges and then back down to the focal area. They stress height and suggest power and strength. –Horizontal line: provide slower eye movement, stressing width rather than height. They are parallel with the container rim and table surface providing stability and implying restfulness. –Diagonal line: slanting lines that cause more eye movement and are dynamically energetic. –Curved line: suggest motion in a softer manner and allow your eyes to move through the arrangement quickly.

Form & Shape Form refers to the three-dimensional aspect of an object. It is also called Shape. The success of any design depends on the proper blending of shapes.

Space & Depth Space is the three dimensional area in and around a design. Depth is the distance from the front to the back of a design and the viewer’s awareness of this distance. Depth may be emphasized through various techniques.

Texture Texture is the surface characteristics, both visual and tactile. It is included in all parts of the design, including the container, flowers, foliage, and accessories.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN Floral Design Mrs. Henderson

What are the Principles of Design? Harmony & Unity Balance Scale and Proportion Focal Point Rhythm

Harmony & Unity Harmony is the wise selection of individual parts to form a floral composition. Unity is the state of being one, united, or complete in itself. The whole composition must be predominant over its individual parts.

Balance Balance is the quality of a floral arrangement that gives a sense of equilibrium and appeal to the eye. Mechanical Balance, also called physical balance is when the floral arrangement is sound and can stand independently, stable and self- supporting. Visual Balance is when the floral arrangement provides a sense of stability and does not appear unstable. There are four types of Visual Balance. –Symmetrical balance: when identical flowers and foliages are arranged and repeated in the same position on either side of an imaginary central vertical axis. (One side is a mirror image of the other.) –Asymmetrical balance: place unequal visual weight on each side of a central vertical axis. –Radial balance: all elements radiate or circle out from a common central point like the spokes of a wheel or the rays of the sun. –Open balance: material is used throughout a design in a more relaxed and unstructured manner. There are no rules, but still rely on a sense of balance.

Scale & Proportion Scale is another word for size and refers to the overall size of an object compared with other objects; a flower, container, or accessory is only large or small when in comparison with something else. Proportion describes the relationship of one part of a floral design to the other parts as well as to the whole.

Focal point Focal point is a point of emphasis that attracts attention. It also may be called focal area and is the center of interest and visual activity.

Rhythm Rhythm is a flow or movement characterized by the regular recurrence of elements or features. It creates a sense of movement.
