2 Bell Ringer O What role do individuals have around the world in standing up to injustice in other countries, like racism and genocide? O What role do countries have around the world in standing up to injustice in other countries, like racism and genocide? O How do these issues relate to sovereignty?

5 O Sixty million people died in World War II O 7.5 million soviet citizens died O 2,500 US killed at pearl harbor and 3.5 million overall O 250,000 people were killed by atomic bomb in Hiroshima O What is your opinion of these statistics from WWII? What do you think is the best way to help the nations of the world keep peace?

6 United Nations O Organization formed at the close of WWII to improve the condition of developing countries and maintain world peace.

7 Let’s Play “United Nations of Kenwood”!!!! You will each be given a number…remember it, it is important! O You will be given a school policy that must be voted on O You will have 30 seconds to write your vote and give your reasons for your vote O Each person will get one vote

8 Scenario 1 O Kenwood academy will implement school uniforms next year

9 Scenario 2 O Kenwood Academy will be year round next year. We will receive the same amount of days off, but they will be dispersed throughout the year. More shorter breaks, no long summer breaks

10 Scenario 3 O Kenwood class sizes will be limited to 15 students

11 Scenario 4 O Gym classes at Kenwood Academy will be reduced to twice a week

12 UN Security Council O 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council: O United States O Britain O France O China O Russia O All were VICTORS of WWII O They have veto power in all UN resolutions that go before the security council. If one disagrees then resolution cannot pass.

13 Reflection O Which international organization do you think is most important and effective and why?

14 Bellringer: Answer these questions based on the reading from last night4/5 O When was the organization started? O How many countries were/are members? O Why was the organization started? O What were/are the goals? O Does the organization exist today?

17 O Write 3 different problems or issues that are problems within the world today. Then write if it affects the US and another country it affects. Problem EX: Global Warming Affect US? Yes Another country it affects China

18 Think-pair-share O Examine United nations flowchart O Write 3 observations about the chart O Make 3 predictions about what types of issues the United Nations addresses based on the flowchart O Can you find the committee that would address one of the problems you wrote for the BR? What problem and which committee?

20 Kenwood UN Committees O Think of something you want changed at Kenwood O Take a vote on the topic in your group-majority wins O Write resolution: Our group believes that ___________. The new rule will be enforced starting on the 1st of ______, _____ (next month, this year). O This decision was made because (give 2 reasons for your decision)

21 O Each group will have 30 seconds to present their resolution and reasons for it. O Class will vote on one resolution O One resolution will be decided on when there is a majority vote
