Main Menu  Click the link to go to the topics  Click the home icon to return to this page!  The Plant life cycle consists of 4 different stages.  Stage1: Seed Stage1: Seed  Sprouts Sprouts  What happens after a seed sprouts? What happens after a seed sprouts?  Stage 2: Seedling Stage 2: Seedling  Stage 3: Mature plant Stage 3: Mature plant  Stage 4: Flowering plant Stage 4: Flowering plant  Pollination Pollination  Steps of Pollination Steps of Pollination  Vocabulary Vocabulary  Questions Questions

Stage 1: Seeds  A seed needs water and sunlight to grow.  When a plant gets enough water and sunlight a baby plant known as and embryo develops and pushes its way out of the seed.  This process is called germination  Germination is when a seed begins to grow. Main Menu

Sprouts  Next the seed will sprout  A sprout is a small plant that grows out of the top of the seed. The sprout will turn into a plant.  The seedling will also grow roots  Roots grow out of the bottom of the seed, they provide the plant with the nutrients it needs to live. Main Menu

What happens After the Seed Sprouts?  The sprout will use sunlight, water and nutrients from the soil to grow.  Next, the sprout will become a seedling. Main Menu

Stage 2: Seedling  A seedling is small, thin plant with few leaves  Then, seedling will become a mature plant, it will grow taller and have many leaves.  Plants, such as trees take years to become a mature plant. Main Menu

Stage 3: Mature Plant  A mature plant is also known as an adult plant.  A Mature plant is much larger then the seedling  A mature plant also has many leaves and stems. Main Menu

Stage 4: Flowering plant  A flowering plant is a mature plant that grows flowers.  A flower is very important to the plant life cycle  The Flower is the reproductive organ of the plant.  Through pollination the flower will produce seeds. These new seeds will start the plant life cycle all over again. Main Menu

Pollination  Pollination is the process of making seeds through fertilization. To produce a seed flowers need pollen from other flowers.  Flowers can’t do this on their own so they rely on the wind or insects to transfer pollen from one plant to another.

Steps of Pollination  1. Insects like bees are attracted to the bright colors of the flowers.  2. while collecting nectar, pollen sticks to the insects bodies  3. The insect flies to another flower and the pollen is left on the new flower  This pollen fertilizes the flower’s egg and a seed is produced. Main Menu

How The Cycle Continues  Once a seed is produced by the flowering plant the life cycle can start over again.  Things like the wind or other animals will carry new seeds to different locations.  This process will be repeated many times Main Menu

Vocabulary  Embryo- a baby plant growing inside the seed  Germination- the process of an embryo beginning to grow.  A sprout is a small plant that grows out of the top of the seed  A seedling is small, thin plant with few leaves that grows after a seed has sprouted  A flowering plant is a mature plant that grows flowers.  Pollination is the process of making seeds through fertilization Main Menu

Lets Start! What is a baby plant that develops inside the seed called? A. Seedling Seedling B. Baby plant Baby plant C. Embryo Embryo

Try Again! Main Menu Click to go back to the question An embryo is a baby plant that grows inside the seed. With water and nutrients the embryo will grow out of the seed

Correct! Good Job! Click for the next question! Main Menu

More Questions True Or False? A sprout grows flowers. A. True True B. False False

Try Again! Main Menu Click to go back to the question Sprouts are small plants that develop after the embryo. They have few leaves and stems

Correct! Good Job! Click for the next question! Main Menu

More Questions The flower… A. Absorbs nutrients from the soil Absorbs nutrients from the soil B. Is the reproductive organ of the plant Is the reproductive organ of the plant C. Makes the plant pretty so people won’t step on them Makes the plant pretty so people won’t step on them

Try Again! Main Menu Click to go back to the question A flower is the reproductive organ of a plant. Without the flower, pollination can not occur.

Correct! Good Job! Click for the next question! Main Menu

Final Question!  How do new seeds repeat the plant life cycle? A. Once the seed produced animals or the wind will carry the seed to a new location. Then it starts the plant lifecycle again Once the seed produced animals or the wind will carry the seed to a new location. Then it starts the plant lifecycle again B. The plant life cycle doesn't start again The plant life cycle doesn't start again C. While collecting nectar, seeds stick to insects like bees. The bees carry the seeds from flower to flower. This starts the plant life cycle again While collecting nectar, seeds stick to insects like bees. The bees carry the seeds from flower to flower. This starts the plant life cycle again

Try Again! Main Menu Click to go back to the question The cycle does start again! Once the seed produced animals or the wind will carry the seed to a new location. Remember Bees carry pollen from flower to flower. This is called pollination

Correct! Good Job! Click to go to the next page Main Menu
