2 Communicating a clear message is not always easy
Communicating a clear message is not always easy. Poor communication can cause a serious misunderstanding. Sometimes it gives the wrong impression.

3 WHY is learning to communicate such an important skill?

4 HOW do we communicate everyday? List all of the different ways.

COMMUNICATION is actually a complex process There are 2 parts to communication. What do you think they are?

6 The 2 parts to communication are:
The SENDER – transmits or sends a message 2. The RECEIVER- hears and Interprets the message

7 PART 1: THE SENDER & COMMUNICATING

8 When two people are communicating in person, there are 2 types of communication going on:
NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION – body movement, facial expressions, eye contact, gestures 2. VERBAL COMMUNICATION – The words you use and the way that you use them

9 How can NONVERBAL language be misinterpreted?

10 How can VERBAL language be misinterpreted?

11 When you are trying to communicate your thoughts and feeling with others, one way to do it so that there is no misunderstanding is to use I-STATEMENTS!

12 AVOID using YOU – STATEMENTS
AVOID using YOU – STATEMENTS ! They send the message that you are judging, commanding or blaming the other person. They come across as an attack & the receiver immediately gets defensive. The person may feel like his thoughts, opinions or plans are unimportant.

13 PART 2: THE RECEIVER

14 Your skill in LISTENING is an important part of communicating effectively. You RECEIVE a message in 2 parts: 1. Take in the message 2. Interpret the message

Have you ever been talking to a friend that is listening…..but NOT really?

16 This person is a PASSIVE LISTENER
This person is a PASSIVE LISTENER. They are “listening” but not understanding or making meaning of the sounds.

17 How do you know someone is an ACTIVE LISTENER?

19 WHAT AFFECTS COMMUNICATION?

20 Self-Esteem People with low self-esteem tend to interpret differently
People that are afraid to share thoughts Fear of rejection

21 YOUR EMOTIONAL STATE When emotions are intense, both emotions and strong personal feelings are intense Your communication may not be clear and accurate if you are overly upset Once you are calm you will communicate your message so others can understand

22 THE ENVIRONMENT Time of day Place Fatigue or illness

Close minded Prejudice Mixed messages Poor listening
