3 By this time – 13 colonies or English colonies To the west – French settlements – They begin to battle over territory - Pittsburgh – French and Indians against the British and colonists – American theatre of the Seven Years’ War (1756) – Both end in 1763 – Treaty of Paris French land becomes British land Trade, land to settle

5 Settlement was prohibited beyond Appalachian Mountains – land acquired – Avoiding further wars with Natives This created much resentment by colonists toward crown

6 British in debt – costly war Tax Colonists – pay off debt – They benefited from war 1765 – Stamp Act – Legal documents, papers Need stamp to be legitimate – No representation in Parliament for Colonists
