1 Why do people come to the USA? Push and Pull Factors

2 Push factors People come to the USA to get away from  war  poverty  unemployment  persecution, e.g. religious  lack of human rights  dictatorship

3 Pull Factors People are attracted to the USA because of  the chance of a new life  wealth and land  work and opportunities  political and religious freedom  the American Dream

4 Equality and The American Dream The American Dream is a belief that in the United States of America people are treated equally.

5 Equality and The American Dream  Everyone has the same chances in life  Everyone can go to school and college to be educated  Everyone can get a good job and earn lots of money  Anyone can start a business or buy a house  Anyone can become a film star or President (or both)

6 Democracy and The American Dream  The American Dream is a belief that in the USA people can vote freely for representatives who will do their best to run the country on their behalf.  People want to live in the USA because it is a very democratic country.

7 Capitalism and The American Dream  The American Dream is a belief that in the USA people are allowed to do what they like with their money (capital).  They can set up their own businesses, be successful, make profits and become wealthy.

8 Modern Studies Department8 Capitalism Way a country organises its economic activity. Free to invest in any business. Competition and demand are high. Taxes are low meaning that people can keep a lot of the profit. Set up own companies, work hard and achieve the American Dream.

9 So……. For many, the American Dream is a belief that by living in the USA people will have an equal opportunity to improve their living standards with hard work and where they are free to live their lives the way they want to.

10 Modern Studies Department10 Rights and Responsibilities Right: To vote Responsibility: To participate in the political system. Example: Vote for a Governor of a State. Right: To stand for election. Responsibility: To run a fair campaign. Example: Presidential campaign 2008, Obama vs. McCain.

11 Modern Studies Department11 Rights and Responsibilities Right: To protest against a law. Responsibility: To protest peacefully. Example: Anti-abortion protests. Right: Freedom of speech. Responsibility: Allow people to express their ideas. Example: Nation Rifle Association conferences.
