1 THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE

2 REGULAR VERBS. They end in -ED
REGULAR VERBS. They end in -ED. If the base form ends in –E, add only –D. If the base form ends in –Y after a consonant, change the Y to I and add –ED. I stayed at a hotel last Friday. (Stay) We arrived yesterday. (Arrive) Mattew studied all night. (Study)

The regular simple past verb ending has three sounds: T / D / ID. It depends on the last sound of the base form of the verb. It’ s pronounced T after the voiceless sounds: F: Laugh. She laughed a lot with your joke. K: Like. We liked their new house. P: Hope. They hoped that. S: Cross. I crossed that river. ∫: Wash. My mother washed my clothes. T∫: Watched. Tony watched TV last weekend.

4 The final sound is pronounced D after vowel sounds.
Stay: We stayed at my sister’s house. Die: He died two years ago. Snow: It snowed a lot last winter.

5 The final sound is pronounced ID after:
T: Visit She visited her parents yesterday. D: End. The movie ended at 10:00.

6 PRACTICE ONE. Use the following verbs to write sentences in past about the pictures below. Write what pronunciation corresponds to each verb. DANCE/ WATCH / WORK /TRAIN / DIRECT/ PLAY EXAMPLE: Peter trained a lion in the circus last year. (D)

7 IRREGULAR VERBS. They have different forms in the simple past.
EAT- (Ate): I ate pizza yesterday. GO- (Went): Andrew went to the movies with his friends. BUY- (Bought): Jeremy bought a present for his mother last week.

8 For a negative sentence: ☺+ DID NOT+ the base form of the verb (DIDN’T)
I didn’t eat pizza yesterday. Andrew didn’t go to the movies with his friends. My mother didn’t wash my clothes.

9 To make a YES/NO question: DID+☺+ THE BASE FORM OF THE ? VERB
Did you eat anything? Did you play soccer on Saturday?

10 PRACTICE. FILL IN THE CHART.
