4 Ancient Roots The concept of citizenship dates back more than 2,500 years ago to ancient Greece and Rome - Only men with property 1700s- revolutionary thinkers brought back ancient ideas with some changes Citizens- belonging to a nation Power from the Gov’t comes from the people African Americans got the right to vote- 14 th Amendment Women got the right to vote- 19 th Amendment Citizenship now is not based on wealth, gender, race or religion. -2 ways to become a citizen -Born -Naturalization

5 Natural Born Citizens Anyone born in the 50 states Anyone born in an American territory Children born on American soil who’s parents are not citizens Born in another country can claim citizenship in two cases Both parents are citizens One parent is a citizen an lives in the US Dual Citizenship

6 Naturalized Citizens Requirements to become Nationalized – 18 or older – Lawful permanent resident for 5 years – Must be able to read, write, and speak English – Good moral character – Show an understanding of U.S. civics Steps – Application – Citizenship exam – Ceremony/oath

7 Losing Citizenship Expatriation – Naturalized citizen of another country Denaturalization – Lied on application (can be deported) Convicted of certain crimes – Treason – Rebellion – Overthrowing the gov’t by violent means

8 Foreign Born Residents Legal Aliens – Resident aliens- legal immigrant who permanently lives in the US – Nonresident aliens- stays in the US for a short period of time Refugees- escaping danger from their homeland Illegal Aliens – 1 million people per year – US citizens family receive the highest priority – People come and stay without permission, or asking permission, or cross the borders – 12 million are living in the US illegally
