APPEARANCE VS REALITY The Walking Dead First Season Third Season

Brief Description Carol is introduced in The Walking Dead as a quiet, vulnerable character with an abusive husband and 1 daughter. After both her daughter and husband were killed by zombies her character becomes independent and strong. Rick, the leader, comes to trust her and allows her to read story books to the children daily. However, Carol is not reading stories to the children rather she was teaching them how to use weapons and kill zombies. The most latest and shocking event has been the mysterious murder of two group members who fell ill. Rick being a former police officer had Carol guard the other sick people while he investigated the scene. Later on he ironically found out Carol had been the one to commit the murders.

Analysis & Rationale Appearance: At the beginning of the series Carol is seen as a character who is weak and dependent of others. Many other characters feel bad for her due to her having an extremely abusive husband. Reality: Once Carol’s husband was killed, she became brave and independent showing her true colours. Sometimes she is even seen as a heartless individual due to her current actions.

Analysis & Rationale Appearance: Rick has allowed Carol to read stories to the children to help them live a normal childhood once again. This is seen as a kind action well-appreciated by the entire group. Reality: Carol is only partially reading the children storybooks. On top of the reading, she is teaching them about weapons and how to kill the zombies which is against Rick’s orders.

Analysis & Rationale Appearance: Carol guards and nurtures the sick people to make sure the killer does not attack once again. Reality: After investigating the crime scene, Rick came to conclusion that Carol had been the one to kill the two original sick people.

Connection to Macbeth Macbeth was trusted by many and never seen as a physical threat much like Carol. The sentence “He was a gentleman on whom I built an absolute trust.” relates back to Rick putting all his trust into Carol only to have her abuse that trust by murdering 2 people and teaching young children how to kill and use weapons. Just like Macbeth, Carol’s character has become more cold-hearted and less trustworthy throughout the different seasons of the series.
