9 Labeling Theory The labeling theory is exactly what the title describes it to be. It is a victim being labeled deviant by society and or specific groups like the police. There are two types of labeling that the victim proclaims. One being primary deviance where the victim complete denies the labeling against them or secondary deviance where they except that what they are being labeled as is indeed true. There are different ways of rejection victims take to avoid the labeling. One, denial of responsibility, two denial of injury, three, denial of victim, four, condemnation of condemners, and finally appealing to higher loyalties In this case Casey was being attacked by everyone in the country calling her a “baby killer” and needed to be put to the death penalty. Yet Casey went right to the tactic of primary deviance. Throughout the entire trial she proclaimed none of what was being filed against her was actually true. Which then brings her into “denial of responsibility.” She blamed the “nanny” that was not even relevant to the case since she did not know the Anthony’s before Caylee’s disappearance. She then went at her own father saying that he had decomposed the body after Caylee had drowned in the family swimming pool. Therefore, the perfect example of the labeling theory.
