3 1. Old Imperialism Gold-riches from the new world God-spread Christianity Glory-make a name for themselves and the country they are exploring for.

4 2. New Imperialism The Industrial Revolution is the turning point that separates old imperialism and new imperialism (mid 1700’s). Natural resources, markets for goods, strategic location (naval bases, refueling stations).

5 3.Boer War The Dutch are fighting the British over control of South Africa. The British win and take control of South Africa. Begin the policy of apartheid (racial segregation).

6 4. “White Man’s Burden” Excuse or justification by Europeans for taking over Africa. Belief that their culture is superior to all others and they are obligated to spread it. Based on a negative view towards colonies. Inferior view of non-westerners.

7 5. Europeans benefit Gained raw materials and markets for goods-trade. Land. Imperialism benefits the Mother Country and exploits the colony.

8 6. Opium War Treaty of Nanking ends the Opium War- It says- China had to pay for the destroyed opium, turn over the port of Hong Kong. British gain the right to extraterritoriality. Sphere of influence- one nation controls the economy of another. Boxers fought back.

9 7. Japan Imperialistic Wanted to industrialize so that the Europeans would not take over. Japan has no natural resources- took over China- it was close and had abundant natural resources.

10 8. Motives Motives- reasons. Natural resources, markets for goods. Climate- grow cash crops. Location- island.

11 9. Reasons Europeans conquered More advanced military and better technology. Africa- the people were not united (tribalism). India- divide and conquer.

12 10. Advantages/Disadvantages Advantages- new technology, healthcare, education, communication, built roads, bridges, canals, ports and railroads. Disadvantages- mother country makes all the laws. High taxes. Africa- divided without regard for tribal groups- civil war. Cultures destroyed. Cultural diffusion- speak English in India- Parliamentary democracy. Christianity.
