Recap last lesson… 1)What are the 5 functions of the skeleton? 2)List the 2 bones in the lower leg. 3)List all the bones in your arm. 4)List all the bones in your foot. 5)Where in your body could you find a hinge joint?

Answers…. 1)T o give shape and support enabling good posture. To allow movement via muscle attachment sites. To protect vital internal organs. To produce red and white blood cells. To store minerals. 2)F ibula & Tibia. 3)H umerus, Radius & Ulna. 4)T arsals, Metatarsals & Phalanges. 5)K nee & Elbow.

Lesson Objectives 1)To understand the different components of the axial and appendicular skeleton. 2)To understand the different types of joint. 3)To understand the different types of synovial joint and apply them to a practical situation.

PARTS OF SKELETON AXIAL SKELETON Cranium, Spine and Pelvis APPENDICULAR SKELETON Limbs (Arms and Legs)

L.O 1 = 1)To understand the different components of the axial and appendicular skeleton. Do you understand the difference between the 2 parts of the skeleton?

IMMOVEABLE (FIXED) JOINT Actually these joints do not move Examples Flat bones of the skull Diagram of fixed joint Why are they fixed?

SLIGHTLY MOVEABLE These joints have limited movement Example These joints are a part of the vertebral column Why do you think they need to have a limited amount of movement? What’s this disc shape?

MOVEABLE (SYNOVIAL) JOINTS You will need to know the 6 main types of synovial joints and be able to apply them in a practical situation.

L.O 2 = 2) To understand the different types of joint. Can you tell me the 3 different types of joint? Can you tell me the characteristics of each?

TYPES OF SYNOVIAL JOINT BALL AND SOCKET HINGE PIVOT ELLIPSOID SADDLE GLIDING

BALL AND SOCKET Hip Joint & Shoulder Joint What sport/skill would require movement at the shoulder or hip joint?

HINGE Elbow or Knee. What sport/skill would require movement at the elbow or knee?

PIVOT Between the Atlas and Axis joints at the top of the vertebral column What sport/skill would require movement at this joint?

ELLIPSOID Between the phalanges. What sport/skill would require movement at this joint?

GLIDING Carpal Bones in the Wrist. What sport/skill would require movement at this joint?

SADDLE Found in the thumb. What sport/skill would require movement at this joint?

L.O 3 = 1)To understand the different types of synovial joint and apply them to a practical situation. Do you know the 6 different types of joint? Are you able to give an example of a skill which affects the movement at that type of Joint?
