3 WWI Attacks on supplies became just as important as attacks on soldiers –British Navy blockade prevented supplies reaching Germany –German U-Boats Blockaded and blew up any ship carrying supplies into Britain –Lusitania Public Opinion –Propaganda was used to convince people to hate the enemy

4 WWI As the war moved on, morale on both sides dropped –Germany was running out of soldiers –Britain was almost bankrupt –Russian Revolution Backs out of war United States provides boost –Joins the Allied forces

5 WWI Why join the War? –Americans and Wilson had wanted to stay out of the war Series of events changed their minds –Felt sympathy for Britain and France –Germany started blowing up ships again –Zimmerman Telegram 1917 Wilson asks congress for war

6 WWI With Fresh new American soldiers, the Allies were able to push back Germany –Austria Hungary collapsed –Ottoman Empire asks for peace Armistice was settled Terms of peace were now discussed

7 WWI Treaty of Versailles –Put all blame on Germany Forced them to admit blame –Pay reparations –Limited their power Effects outside of Germany –More independent European countries –Expansion of Western power over Africa and Asia League of Nations Offered hope that war would end
