(use the actual words of the Preamble)  For each purpose, draw a visualization of it with at least 5 details.  We’ll work for the first 10-15 minutes on this– add color if you have time!

Legislative Branch  Legislative Branch  Also called Congress  Made up of 2 parts: the Senate & the House of Representatives  535 members of Congress in total: 100 Senators + 435 Representatives  The citizens of the United States elect the members of Congress  Main responsibility: making laws for the country  Building: The Capitol

Executive Branch  Executive Branch  The President is the head of the Executive Branch  The Executive Branch has the largest number of employees including the Vice President, the President’s Cabinet, and workers in the “Departments” (like the State Department)  Through the Electoral College, the citizens of the U.S. elect the President & VP  Main responsibility: to make sure the laws are being followed/obeyed  Building (for the President): the White House

Judicial Branch  Judicial Branch  Includes the Supreme Court and all other courts  The Supreme Court is the highest (most important) court in our country  The Supreme Court has 9 members called Justices  The President nominates justices to the Supreme Court.  Main responsibilities : interpret/explain the laws AND determine if the laws passed by Congress agree or disagree with the Constitution  Building: The Supreme Court

Washington, D.C.  Our nation’s capital city: Washington, District of Columbia  Named for: George Washington (1 st President) AND Christopher Columbus  Even though D.C. is named for him, George Washington never served as President there– the capital when he was President was New York City and, then, Philadelphia  D.C. does NOT belong to any state: rather it is located between Maryland and Virginia
