1 Chapter 1- A Time to Remember People; childhood; memories

2 Getting to Know You  How do you meet people?  With a partner, brainstorm three different ways to meet people.  Do you think Ana and Ted could be friends?

3 Do you think Ana and Ted could be friends? Ana- Born in Buenos Aires; grew up in Los Angeles; has a high school diploma; is a college student; likes to go to the movies and take long walks; learning to in-line skate. Ted- Born in Dallas, Texas; grew up in Los Angeles; has a college degree; is a computer specialist; loves to be outdoors; enjoys skiing and swimming and cooking.

4 Personal Profile  Do people in your country use personal ads? Internet dating?  Have you ever used personal ads? Internet dating?  Create your own personal profile and compare it with a partner.  How are you the same? Different?

5 Meeting Singles When people are meeting singles, people often make invitations for dates or other activities.  What expressions can you think of for accepting or refusing invitations?  What excuses can you think of when you really don’t want to go out with someone?

6 Listening “Meeting Singles”  Where did Diane and Doug first meet?  How did Doug know where she lived?  Where does Doug invite her to go with him on Thursday?  What is Diane’s response?  How does Diane feel about Doug’s invitation?

7 Simple Past Tense  Talking about events that started, happened, and stopped in the past. Example: I worked in Seoul. Meaning: I worked there (in the past), but I no longer do. Can you think of other examples?

8 Simple Past Tense- Form To be- Was/Were Where were you born? I was born in Korea. Were you born in Seoul? Yes, I was. No, I wasn’t. I was born in Daejeon.

9 Simple Past Tense- “Did” When you use “did”, the second verb stays in present form. When did you move to Daejeon? I moved here two weeks ago. I didn’t speak Korean. Did you take English classes in Korea? Yes, I did. I took classes for a year. No, I didn’t. My boyfriend taught me.

10 Mystery!!!  There was a robbery at an office on campus Saturday at 10:00.  One person, Sandy, thinks she saw the thief.  Fill in the blanks using a past form of be (was, wasn’t, were, weren’t).

11 What is it in past tense? Eat Tell Listen Is See Dance Are Hear Paint Do Give Erase Go Watch Shout Buy Play Drink Visit

12 Story  With a partner, pick 5 verbs and write a short story of a past experience.  5 sentences with these 5 verbs.

13 Mystery!!!  5 suspects in our class!  Write some questions you will ask these suspects. Examples: Where were you on Saturday evening? What were you doing?

14 Listening- “Life as an Immigrant”  Where are they from?  When did/he she move to the United States?  What is difficult about being an immigrant?  What does he/she miss the most?

15 Useful Expressions  Really? Me, too!  Wow! What was it like?  Can you tell us more?

16 Used to Used to refers to something that you regularly did in the past, but don’t do anymore. Example: I used to be very messy, but now I’m very neat. I used to drink coffee, but now I drink tea. Can you think of other examples?

17 Used to Write 5 sentences about things you used to do when you were a child. When I was a child, I used to… 1. Fight with my sister. 2. 3. 4. 5.
