5. Repair/ Upgrade and maintain -Planning Steps for School repair & maintenance through SMC/community of parents, children, teachers and others. Assessment and annual planning:- Thorough inspection of the school infrastructure Assess the quantum of repair for each and every components:- – School building, – Toilets and handwashing facilities – Drinking water facilities, – Storage tanks, – Water source, – Ramps railing, – Child friendly elements etc. Tentative cost estimation with the consultation/help of local masons and other skilled worker. Cross checking /verifying the value in the local market. Plan works and link resources funding and execute

Funds for O&M- Resource linking and execution Assess resource availability and pooling of funds : - Resources available under SSA (School maintenance grant) Resources through convergence – – MP /MLA funds, – RD scheme (Untied fund, 13 th Finance commission etc.) – MNREGS – Contributed through community. Assess and pool all financial resource for execution of O&M works. – The annual maintenance need to carried out effectively – Ensure quality to sustain the school infrastructure as long as possible.

7. School Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Schedule for WASH: SMC members and school teachers to take responsibility to plan O&M schedules and follow. Each school should have O&M schedules Monitoring schedule – Periodic visits of District/BRC/CRC staff to monitor O&M schedules follow up School monitoring visit – monitoring format! WASH indicators monitoring and star grading Supervision:- Designating supervisors (at the suitable level) to visit schools and make adequate observations for appropriate follow-up actions.

Involvement of Stakeholders School Management Committees, – Planning and execution of work – Monitoring of works Headmasters and teachers: – Encourage students to consistently use, operate and maintain school WASH facilities. – Get involved in planning, oversight and ongoing management of WASH in school – consultation with students and parents; – Participation in monitoring and corrective actions. Parents, community, PRIs etc. – Contribute in installation, operation and maintenance – Contribute to recurrent costs of WASH related supplies such as soap – Participation in monitoring and corrective actions.

10. Cleaning and maintenance schedule : General check list – Daily maintenance: General cleaning - indoor floors of the entire school including toilet and kitchen. Cleaning of any water-logging in the entire school premises. Dusting of general storage, desks and benches and toy/book storage for children. Weekly maintenance: Check for all leaky taps, valves, flushing cisterns etc. Check for any blockage in the drains, sewage pipes and waste water pipes Check for loose locks and shutters of all the doors, windows and almirah etc. Loosening of fine sand with a shovel wherever required Periodic observation and executing corrective actions for functionality/O&M

11. Fortnightly maintenance: Cleaning of dust from all appliances and walls etc. Remove dumped rubble/debris/building waste from the premises. Observe any water logging in open areas. Check for clogged drains on the ground, courtyard, and water outlets from courtyards. Remove stains and marks on the enamel painted portions of the walls (especially corners and edges) door, window, almirah shutters with damp cloth/mill detergent dampened cloth. 12. Monthly maintenance: Check for any damp marks on the walls, ceilings, and floor. Check for any termites in the building. Check for proper hardware operation of all doors, windows and almirahs. Check for any cracks on walls and roofs. Check if main water storage tank cover and outlets are leaking and the stored water is clean. Check if all the manhole covers/inspection chamber covers are properly in place and not damaged. Check if the First Aid kit is up-to-date and the medicines are within their expiry date. 13. Seasonal/quarterly maintenance (before monsoon) Check the water tank thoroughly for leakage etc. Seal it with water proof cement or sealant and clean it at regular intervals. In case of an underground tank, check if the cover and the brim of the tank is intact and sufficiently raised from the surrounding ground level. Thorough cleaning of the roof, water outlets, checking for cracks, broken gola, coping, chhajja etc. Checking and repairing of leaky roofs Leveling and cleaning of open school ground. Thorough checking of electrical lines and earthing (if applicable). Clean all dust from the fans, tube lights and bulbs.
