14 I blindly searched for the light switch and pulled the smooth lever. The blinding, bright light flickered, then plunged me into darkness. The shadows jumped out at me, then hovered in the corners. I found a candle and watched it blaze. The gold, crimson and orange gleamed as I sat down soundlessly at the table and sighed warily. A low, haunting sound rose from downstairs. The music grew louder as heavy footsteps sauntered up the stairs. The strong fragrant smell of cologne wafted up and filled my nose. I bit my lip, tasting blood. The blood drained from my face as a dark figure appeared in the doorway. It hesitated, then giggled, a low, booming snicker that made my blood run cold and my breath come out in shallow gulps. It continued towards me and reached out. I screamed a high-pitched, ear- piercing shriek. Before it could touch me, my terrified eyes rolled back into my head and I slumped onto the floor.
