2 Introduction Poetry expresses through words what is happening in the heart and soul. When a poet writes, he uses figurative language. He may use sensory imagery to make you remember things you saw, smelled, tasted, touched, and heard.

4 Examples: Clasify each image as tactile, visual, auditory, gustatory, or olfatory and check your answers on the next slide. 1.The deep, blue sea sparkled in the sun. 2.Soft, smooth fabric covered the chair. 3.The tinkle of sweet bells filled the air. 4.The jam was flavored strawberry and cherry. 5.We perceived orchids and roses in the air. 6.The wet, sticky mud clings to my hand.

6 The Sensory Poem This is a poem where you use your imagination to connect abstract concepts with concrete objects. It uses the five senses to accomplish this. You create sensory images that evoke images, smells, feelings, sounds and more in your reader. Let’s see a diagram.

8 Example of a Sensory Poem The Lighthouse Sounds like a song Smells like the ocean Tastes like salt spray Looks like a friend and feels like a breeze.

9 Now prepare your own poem. Write one Sensory Poem about any topic that interests you. The theme can be abstract (love, friendship), or concrete (my child, the car, food), and the tone can be funny, serious, or mixed. Use a dictionary for help. Post your poem on the discussion board for 20 pts. (see checklist on next slide)
