2 Slavery and the West In 1819 there was a balance in the united states, 11 states allowed slavery and 11 states did not. Both the north and south, with their different economic systems were competing for new lands in the western territories. The north wanted new territories to be free states, while the south wanted them to be slave states. These differences lead to sectionalism Sectionalism is the exaggerated loyalty to a particular region of the country. These issues came to a head when Missouri applied for statehood.

Except Missouri This Compromise preserved the balance between slave and free states in the senate and postponed the bitter debate over slaver
