2 Mid-Atlantic Colonies Known for great diversity Colonies are: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware Proprietary colony – granted by a king or queen to an individual or group who had full governing rights William Penn – founder of Pennsylvania o Quakers – members of the Protestant group that had suffered persecution in England

3 Southern Colonies Georgia, South & North Carolinas, Virginia, & Maryland o All were proprietary colonies o Maryland was a Roman Catholic Colony founded by George Calvert Georgia was managed not by owners but by trustees o Someone entrusted to look after a business

4 Massachusetts Bay Colony Founded in 1630 Great Migration: Flood of colonists who came to New England Reasons for Migration: Religious tolerance o The idea that people of different religions should live together

5 Additional Notes Royal Charter: Colony with governor appointed by the king Captain Miles Standish o English military officer hired by the Pilgrims as military advisor for Plymouth Colony. o Standish played a leading role in the administration and defense of Plymouth Colony from its inception
