4 Project Design IR 1. Decreased risk of WBD transmission through a participatory education piece focusing on behavior change through a social marketing campaign that creates demand for improved sanitation technology through capacity building to provide improved sanitation

6 Social Marketing Demand for improved sanitation technology will be created through social marketing campaign. Fokotany's will determine: 1. do we need this? 2. what type of technology is appropriate for us? 3. where is the most appropriate place for the technology (e.g., pit latrine)?

7 Community-driven communication Highly participatory process where communities develop communication strategies around sanitation and hygiene to promote positive behaviors that are appropriate for their settings. This provides a supportive environment which enables people to initiate and sustain positive behavior outcomes.behavior Example: promoting education through folklore

8 Create supply Utilizing existing capacity (construction, business, engineering) and provide technical training necessary to provide these low-tech solutions to fokotany's Providing seed money for these individuals to create sustainable social enterprises Capacity-Building

10 Conditionalities need to teach local fokotany's about how to utilize and maintain technology need to provide (x) amount of free consultations and technology to high priority fokotany's

11 Scale ●Scale ○3-year pilot in the Ranomafana, Isalo, Fort Dauphinand Toliara regions in the south with the possibility of scaling to more locales ○M&E will inform any redesign of programmatic activities, if needed

12 Sustainability ●Sustainability ○ Project designed with collaboration and participationas key components ○ Project designed to have self-sustaining fundingmechanism (social enterprise)

13 Exit Strategy ●Exit (Phase Down & Phase Over) ○Government handover (after a 3-year period) ■Regional communes will be responsible for maintaining BCC component (ie, creating demand for the sanitation tech and promoting healthy behavior change) with technical training and support provided by USAID and PIH. ○ Community handover ■Social enterprises will be responsible for responding to demand for sanitation technology ■Participation in community-driven communicationstrategies will be maintained
