1 Settlement They met again at Yalta in 1945 and the SU agreed to join against Japan in return for territorial gains in China and Japan Germany divided into four zones Eastern Europe was left under Soviet domination Soviets annexed part of Eastern Poland, who gained compensation by receiving part of Eastern Germany

2 Settlement Japan was occupied by the USA and stripped of its wartime gains Baltic states once again became Russian provinces. All states except Greece and Yugoslavia fell under Soviet domination. Western nations were free, but under American influence.

3 The Cold War and Decolonization 1945-1989 The crisis ended in 1948 with two Germany’s divided by a border (Berlin Wall). NATO formed in 1949 under American leadership Soviets responded by creating the Warsaw Pact. Soviets had nuclear weapons, which leads to the arms race. North Korea invaded South Korea in 1949, the United Nations under American leadership fought back.
