2 What is an Ethnic Group? A group of people who share language, customs and a common heritage.

3 What is Race? Race A group of human beings distinguished by physical traits, blood types, genetic code patterns or genetically inherited characteristics.

5 Ethnocentrism Believing that one’s own culture is best or better than others.

6 Why people move. Zombie push/pull Zombie push/pull Push – means leaving an area because of what is happening in the area you are leaving. – Ex. Political unrest, no jobs, natural disaster Pull – means leaving an area because of what is happening in the area you are going to. – Ex. Good jobs, stable government, weather

12 What are Birth Rates? Birth Rate – number of live births per 1000 people Fertility Rate – average number of children a woman will have in her lifetime

13 What are Death Rates? Death (Mortality) Rate – number of deaths per 1000 people Infant Mortality Rate – number of deaths among infants under 1 year old, per 1000 live births

14 What is Rate of Natural Increase? Rate of Natural Increase- % a population grows in one year Birth Rate minus Death Rate = Rate of Natural Increase

17 Making Predictions Look at the shape of these charts, and think about them. Then try to answer these questions on a separate paper. Which has a higher % of children? Which is most wealthy, most poor? Which has the most unemployed? Which probably has best health care? Which has most not going to school?
