SLIDE Investigating Your CAREER 12.1 The Interview Process and Preparation SUMMARY The interviewer’s goal during a job interview is to determine the applicant’s skills and abilities and to determine if he or she will be a good fit for the company. The applicant should be active during the interview process and learn about the company to determine if this is a company where he or she wants to work. There are two basic types of interviews: unstructured and structured. Structured interviews include screening, group, behavioral, dining, telephone, and virtual interviews. Before each interview, applicants should research the company, prepare their portfolio and review their resume, practice answers to common interview questions, and review last-minute details. Applicants should be aware of common interview questions and how to answer them. They should also plan how to deal with illegal interview questions, and determine three or four questions to ask the interviewer. 10 Chapter 12

This provides time to find the right location, review the portfolio, and become familiar with the environment. Applicants should also be aware of their professional image, which includes their attitude, appearance, verbal language, and nonverbal language. The three main components of an interview include opening the interview, the questioning process, and the closing. Nontraditional interviews include dining, telephone, and virtual interviews. Extra preparation may be needed for these types of interviews. 17 Chapter 12

This evaluation should be a true learning experience. Make sure you evaluate the areas of the interview where you did well and those areas where you did not do well. Make sure to follow up after an interview with a thank-you letter or email. If you had a group interview, write a thank-you to each interviewer. Several people may have been interviewed, so make sure to refer to the specific job that you interviewed for. 22 Chapter 12
