2 Thomas Hobbes  Born in 1588 in England  Beliefs of Hobbes  “absolute rule by Kings”  Governments are established to protect people from their natural selfishness

3 Jean Rousseau  Born in France  Basic Beliefs  “Man is born free, yet everywhere he is in chains”  Social Contract--- government gets its power from relationship with its people  If gov. fails the people should change it!!

4 John Locke  Born in England in 1622  Basic beliefs  A Constitutional monarchy with limited power  Natural rights—rights we are born with such as life, liberty and property (LLP)

5 Baron de Montesquieu  Born in France in 1689  Basic beliefs  Separation of powers divided into branches of a government  Limiting power so no tyranny would develop

6 Voltaire  Born in France in 1694  Basic beliefs  Religious tolerance  Free speech --- “I disapprove of what you say, but I defend to the death your right to say it.”

7 Cesare Beccaria  Born in Italy 1738  Basic beliefs  Pioneer in criminology  Protect the rights of the accused  Punishment should fit the crime

8 Quote Analysis  Read each quote and decide whether you Agree or Disagree with it. Write your opinion in the space and on the line.  Go through each one with your group and share everyone’s opinions before you log them in the space provided.  Be respectful of your peers ideas!

9 Letters from Philosophers Evidence  Directions: Based on our lesson on the Enlightenment, create 2 letters discussing Enlightenment ideas on government between John Locke and the philosopher of your choice.  Be sure to have the following in your letters:  a.Opinions of the two men on government  b.Quotes that they said from history blended into your interpretation of their ideas.  c.Have the 2 nd letter respond to the first  d.Be sure to capture their “voice” and attempt to use more educated language and vocabulary  e.Each letter should be 2 paragraphs of 6 to 8 sentences each.
