Leadership is ‘the behavioural process of influencing individuals and groups towards set goals’ Leadership is ‘the behavioural process of influencing individuals and groups towards set goals’ (Barrow, 1977)

4 QUALITIES ASSOCIATED WITH LEADERS IN SPORT Good decision maker Good interpersonal qualities such as communication skills A motivator Tactful and diplomatic Confident Show initiative Organised Gives good advice, direction etc.

5 TYPES OF LEADER ► Leaders can come about through a number of ways, but generally they fulfil the expectations of a group / team ► Carron (1981) identified 2 types of leader: ► EMERGENT LEADERS – come from the group itself either because of their skill / ability or if they are nominated by the group (e.g Steven Gerard, John Terry etc.) ► PRESCRIBED LEADERS – appointed by an outside organising body (e.g Michael Vaughan)

6 Q. Are there any advantages / disadvantages for the leader themselves of being from each of these 2 categories? A. Emergent leaders usually have respect from the group whereas prescribed leaders may not

7 TYPES OF LEADER (cont.) Fiedler (1967) – the effectiveness of a leadership style is dependent on the overall situation. Task Centered Leader – a leader who focuses on setting goals; getting the task done; meeting objectives set; concentrating on performance and productivity. Relationship Centered Leader – focuses on developing and maintaining good interpersonal relationships, is considerate and permissive. Copy model p.708 PE and Sport

8 TYPES OF LEADER (cont.) Autocratic Leaders Autocratic Leaders Very inflexible, make all the decisions and rarely get involved on a personal level with team members. Very task orientated. Better in most and least favourable situations (examples?)

9 Democratic Leaders Only makes decisions after consulting the group. More informal, relaxed and active within the group. They usually show a keen interest in the various people within the group. Performer centered. Better in moderately favourable situations.

10 LLLLAISSEZ – FAIRE LEADERS Leaves the group to ‘get on’ by themselves. Does not interfere. Generally being unsure of the task they tend to not make any evaluations. Acts as a consultant. Group determines the work to be done and the pace of it.
