2 FBA – Functional Behavioral Assessment The process of gathering information about a student’s behavior to determine the need for a Behavioral Intervention Plan. An approach that incorporates a variety of techniques and strategies to diagnose the causes and to identify likely interventions intended to address problem behavior

3 Performance deficit A behavior that the student knows how to perform, but does not consistently do so.

4 IEP – Individualized Education Program A plan to address the specific needs of a student with a disability to appropriate access to general education, in the least restrictive environment, and.

5 Magnitude The force or power of a behavior

6 Target behavior An observable and measurable action identified for intervention.

7 Antecedent Relevant events that precede a target behavior.

8 Data driven decision making Systematically collecting and analyzing various types of data to guide a range of decisions to help improve the success of students.

9 Token Economy a system of behavior modification based on the systematic positive reinforcement of target behavior by earning objects or symbols that can be exchanged for other reinforcers.

10 Skill deficit A behavior that a student does not know how to perform.

11 Positive support Additional services, strategies, or resources needed to address needs which are contributing to an undesirable behavior

12 Consequence What the student derives (gets) from the behavior, not the punishment that occurred.

13 Latency The amount of time between the antecedent for the behavior and the behavior itself

14 Teacher-student game A brief intervention designed to help teachers establish clear expectations for engaged academic behavior and effective transitioning between activities.

15 Punishment weakens a behavior because a negative condition is introduced or experienced as a consequence of the behavior

16 PBIS – Positive Behavior Interventions &Supports The behavioral component of Response to Intervention (see RTI).

17 TMPR Student behavioral change requires adults to Teach, Model, Prompt, and Reinforce expected behaviors

18 Duration The amount of time a behavior lasts

19 Replacement behavior A more socially acceptable alternative option to an undesired action that is to be taught to meet the identified function of the target behavior.

20 Peer triad A group of teachers who observe and provide feedback to each other several times each month in order to regularly monitor and improve methods.

21 Positive Reinforcement the process of increasing the rate or probability of a behavior by pairing it with a desirable stimulus

22 Home/school Team A small group of stakeholders (including a family member) interested in and relevant to a child’s education who meet to discuss and evaluate current data, supports, and programming.

23 RTI - Response To Intervention Is a framework for introducing academic and behavioral interventions to students. Typically 85-90% of students respond to Universal Level intervention, 10-15% of students will require Secondary Level interventions, and 3-5% of students will require Tertiary Level interventions

24 Intervention Promoting positive classroom behaviors by assisting, modeling, demonstrating, practicing, and rewarding appropriate behavior

25 Topography How a behavior looks (the physical dimension)

26 Restrictive disciplinary measure - Consequences for inappropriate behavior which limit or restrict student’s access to peers, education, and/or opportunities. In a BIP, professionals must list the consequences as well as strategies/criteria for their use (detention, suspension, physical restraint, isolated time out, etc.)

27 Function The reason why a student engages in a particular behavior. The benefit s/he is getting from the behavior. There are two options: to obtain (get) or to avoid (escape).

28 Frequency How often a specific behavior occurs.

29 Negative Reinforcement a particular behavior is strengthened by the consequence of the stopping or avoiding of a negative condition

30 Behavior Intervention Plan - BIP An agreement that teaches and supports replacement behaviors and decreases or eliminates opportunities for the student to engage in behavior that hinders positive academic results
