1 States of Matter, Molecules, Atoms, Elements
Unit 3 Day 1 States of Matter, Molecules, Atoms, Elements

2 Bell Ringer 1. Look around the room: name (3)
Solids Liquids Gases (that you see or cannot see!) Name one characteristic each GROUP has in common (3 total). 2. What substance do you see in the video? How does it move? 3. Classify that substance: solid, liquid, or gas? 4. News Clip: Water on Mars: Does state matter?

3 Demo Predict: Will this substance form a solid OR a liquid?
Step 1: Observe this fluid. Would you call it a liquid or solid? Step 2: When I swirl it around, what does it do? Step 3: When I poke it with a pencil, what does it do? Step 4: If you poke a liquid with a spoon, what should it do? Step 5: Defend your answer: What state of matter is this OOZE? In your answer, include at least (2) pieces of evidence!

4 Silly Putty?

5 Baby powder?

6 From the Big Bang… 1. Why are atoms different (what makes them different)? 2. What happens when atoms “stick” together? 3. What forces SQUEEZES atoms together? 4. What makes stars light up?

7

8 Quick Read And Write

9 States of Matter In your groups, order solid, liquid, gas and plasma:
“Packed” particles Heat/Temperature/Energy Form (do they take the form of their container) Resistance to flow

10 What makes different states unique? 1. Energy – Thermal (Heat)!

11 2. How Tightly Packed Molecules Are

12 SOLIDS

13 LIQUIDS If you have different types of molecules dissolved in a liquid, it is called a solution. Honey is a solution of sugar, water, and other molecules.

14 GASES Vapor = gases that are liquids at room temperature
THINK: Name a vapor in the air beside you right now!

15 PLASMA Plasma is different from a gas, because it is made up of groups of positively and negatively charged particles (ions). In neon gas, the electrons are all bound to the nucleus. In neon plasma, the electrons are free to move around. Neon SIGN! DISORDER!

16 THINK: Which state of matter makes up MOST of the…
This Classroom Earth The Universe

17 Matter Matters. Matter: takes up space: ______________ and has ______________________

18 Matter Is made of molecules Molecules are made of atoms
Atoms are made of different elements Common elements can build very different molecules!

19 Water EX) Water is made up of water molecules
Which are made of atoms: H20 Which are made of elements: H, O Hydrogen Oxygen

20

21 Which one has more mass…
Mini-marshmallow Marble Bubble gum

22 Periodic Table Skills: Atomic Mass Challenge
USE YOUR PERIODIC TABLE: Hydrogen Helium Silicon Oxygen Iron List the atomic mass and number for each element. Order these elements from LEAST-GREATEST MASS! Calculate: the mass of one molecule of water (H20)!

23 Most Common Elements in Earth’s Crust

24 Exit Ticket 1. List the states of matter in order from:
Lowest – Highest Energy (Thermal - Heat) Most Tightly Packed Particle – Least Tightly Packed As you heat up matter, what happens to the spacing of its atoms? (hint: think of water!) 2. Contrast: How is the Non-Newtonian fluid like a liquid? How does it behave like a solid? 3. Explain: Do the elements in Earth’s crust have MORE or LESS mass than the elements in the core? Are the crust elements MORE or LESS dense? Why?
