2 Fighting a two-front war  After the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, the United States was faced with fighting a two-front war. European theater: the war in Europe against the Nazi army Pacific theater: the war in the Pacific against Japan  Roosevelt kept the Big Three Alliance focused on war aims Big Three Alliance: U.S., Britain, Soviet Union

3 Fighting a two-front war  The United States adopted the Germany First strategy in which American commanders planned to defeat Hitler first. The United States joined the British and fought to liberate Europe through North Africa, Italy, and France.

9 The Pacific theater  Island hopping was a strategy used by the Navy in order to slowly capture Japanese islands in order to establish air and naval bases The battle of Iwo Jima ○ Island targeted as a place to launch bombing runs from ○ The Americans began to use napalm to destroy Japanese cities after Iwo Jima.

10 The decision to drop the bomb  President Truman was faced with a decision Continue fighting in the Pacific and eventually invade Japan ○ This would mean the loss of more U.S. soldiers Use the newly developed atomic bomb to force Japan to surrender
