7 Who get’s STI’s? STI’s are most common among teens and young adults. Health problems from STI’s are more severe and more frequent for females than males.

8 Who should worry about STIs? Anyone who has: – Unprotected sex – Many sex partners – Gets high or drunk before sex

9 Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) BV is the most common vaginal infection in women of reproductive age and it occurs when there is an overgrowth of certain “bad” bacteria in the vagina. Often there are no symptoms at all, but sometimes BV is accompanied by unusual discharge, strong odor, painful urination, itching, or burning. BV can be treated with antibiotic pills, vaginal creams or suppositories. Sometimes BV will clear up on its own, but getting treatment is important to avoid complications.

10 HPV HPV is a virus that can cause genital warts or asymptomatic infection. HPV is considered the most common STD in the United States. The CDC estimates that 50 to 75 percent of sexually active males and females are exposed to HPV sometimes during their lives. About 30 different types of HPV can infect the genital area. HPV and Cancer

11 HPV Most types of HPV infections are asymptomatic. There is no treatment! Almost all types of cervix cancer are caused by certain types of HPV. HPV can also cause cancer of the penis and anus.

12 Genital Warts Genital warts are pink or reddish warts with cauliflower like tops that appear on the genitals, the vagina, or the cervix one to three months are infection from HPV. Genital Warts are highly contagious and are spread from any type of sexual activity. They can disappear without treatment. They can be treated but once you have the virus you will have for your entire life.

13 Genital Warts Can cause cervical and penis cancer. Mothers can spread the disease onto their unborn children.

15 Chlamydia Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that affects the reproductive organs of both males and females. Chlamydia is asymptomatic. 40% of cases are reported in teens 15 to 19 years old.

16 Chlamydia Symptoms Males – Discharge from penis. – Burning when urinating Females – Vaginal discharge – Burning when urinating – Abdominal pain

17 Chlamydia Untreated females can experience – Pelvic Inflammatory Disease – Chronic Pelvic Pain – Infertility Untreated males can experience – Infertility Chlamydia can cause premature birth, eye disease, and pneumonia.

19 Genital Herpes Genital Herpes is an STD caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV: – Type 1 usually causes cold sores. – Type 2 usually causes of genital sores. Both types can infect the mouth and genitals.

20 Genital Herpes About 20% of the population is infected. Genital Herpes is twice as common today than 20 years ago. Most who have genital herpes are asymptomatic. Blisters show-up in genital area occur periodically. It can spread even when blisters are not present. Diagnosis is made from collecting the fluid from the blisters.

21 Genital Herpes Medications can relieve symptoms but cannot cure the herpes infection. Once contracted it stays in the body for life! The virus can be fatal for children. The virus may also play a major role in the spread of HIV by making people who are infected with herpes more capable of transmitting or acquiring HIV.

22 Gonorrhea Gonorrhea is a bacterial STD that usually affects the mucus membranes. Male Symptoms – Discharge from penis – Painful urination Female Symptoms – Vaginal Discharge – Pain and burning upon urination

23 Gonorrhea Gonorrhea can be cured with antibiotics. Gonorrhea can cause infertility in males and females. If spread to the bloodstream it can cause permanent damage to the joints. Females can pass it on to their babies during childbirth. Infants can contract eye infections that cause blindness.

24 Trichomoniasis Trichomoniasis is an STD caused by a microscopic protozoan that results in infections of the vagina, urethra, and bladder. Symptoms may not appear for some-time. Male Symptoms – Mild utheral itching – Discharge from the penis

25 Trichomoniasis Female symptoms – Discharge – Irritation – Itching

26 Syphilis Syphilis is an STD that attacks many parts of the body and is caused by a small bacterium called spirochete. The first sign of infection if a painless, reddish sore called a chancre. The infection can damage the – Heart, kidneys – Liver, nervous system

27 Syphilis If left untreated the person risks – Paralysis – Convulsions – Heart disease – Blindness Syphilis can be can be transferred to fetus. An infected newborn may have a damaged nervous system and can die from the effects.

28 Pubic Lice Pubic lice (crabs) are tiny, wingless, parasitic insects that can infest your genital area. Pubic lice feed on your blood. Symptoms – Itching – Lice in pubic hair – Nits in the pubic hair – Genital lesions due to bites

29 Pubic Lice Treatment of pubic lice includes applying over- the-counter creams and lotions that kill the parasites.
