 Welcome back! I hope you had a restful break and are ready to dominate the last nine weeks of the semester!  If you did not turn it in before break, please take out your 1984 book jacket. With your groups, quickly review what life is like in a totalitarian state.

 We will: Review 1984 book jackets. Discuss totalitarianism under Joseph Stalin. Define totalitarianism. Censor American media. Ticket out the door/Quick write: Why is freedom of press (the news: TV, papers, internet, etc.) important in societies?

Before his death, Lenin warned, “Comrade Stalin… has concentrated enormous power in his hands, and I am not sure that he always knows how to use that power with sufficient caution.”

 Totalitarianism describes a government that takes total, centralized control over every aspect of public and private life  Totalitarian leaders appear to provide a sense of security and give direction for the future

 Once people realize what’s going on, why does this type of government prevail?

 Police terror – rather than protect the citizens; simply carry out government’s policies; spy on/intimidate the citizens and in the most extreme cases, use murder

 Indoctrination – instruction in the government beliefs to mold people’s minds; take control of education as it begins with young children

 Propaganda and Censorship – release propaganda to sway people to accept certain things; control of mass media – no publication, film, art or music can be released without first being approved by the state

 Religious or Ethnic Persecution – create “enemies of the state” to blame for things that go wrong

 A government that has complete control over every aspect of public and private life. Uses police terror, indoctrination, propaganda and censorship, and religious or ethnic persecution to achieve complete control.

 Stalin built a police state to maintain his power. Monitored telephone lines, planted informers everywhere.  Great Purge was a campaign to eliminate anyone who threatened his power. Charged with “crimes against the Communist state” millions were sent to labor camps (Gulag) or executed

 1937-1938  8-13 million killed (in comparison, the Czars killed 3,932 people for political crimes from 1825-1910)

 1937-1928; Stalin seeks to eliminate all political opposition in Russia  During this time, 8-13 million people were killed

 With your group, skim through the section of newspaper you were assigned. Focusing on titles and briefly skimming the article, censor (block out) any news items that would NOT be published in a totalitarian state. On your post-it notes, you will need to explain the reasons for censorship (4 articles, you can just censor the rest).

 Ticket Out the Door/Quick Write: Answer the original question: Why is freedom of press (the news: TV, papers, internet, etc.) important in societies? You will need to use three pieces of evidence/arguments.
