2 WHAT IS A CONJUNCTION? A conjunction is a sentence joiner.

3 FANBOYS REVIEW The FANBOYS words are coordinating conjunctions. We can use them to combine two complete sentences.

4 FANBOYS REVIEW These conjunctions give roughly equal weight to each part of the new, combined sentence.

5 SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS A subordinating conjunction is used to introduce a subordinate clause.

6 SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS Using a subordinating conjunction to begin a phrase will make a reader want more information to complete the thought.

7 SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS If they have patience and pay close attention, ^Subordinating Conjunction (Subordinate clause) each student will succeed in all of their classes. (Independent clause)

8 SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS When a sentence starts with a subordinate conjunction, you must add a comma at the end of the subordinate clause.

9 SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS If a subordinating conjunction appears in the middle of a sentence, do not use a comma.

10 SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS Comma: When Mrs. Castor gets home, she has to let her dogs outside. No Comma: Mrs. Castor has to let her dogs outside when she gets home.

11 As soon as you copy these conjunctions, compose six sentences. Three (3) must use the subordinating conjunction at the beginning of the sentences. Three (3) must use the subordinating conjunction in the middle/end of the sentence.
