3 EARLY WESTERN EUROPEAN EMPIRES Western Europe was unique in that agriculture took much longer to develop in the areas prone to very cold winters, therefore, populations were small and loyalties were based on family ties and kinship rather than good governance or public behaviors. How are the empires to the left unique from those of the Mediterranean, Asia, Eurasia, and Africa? How does church influence seem to be affecting the map?

4 THE EMPIRE OF CHARLEMAGNE How did Charlemagne unite Western Europe? What would you suspect the cultural outcome of this unification to be? How has this unification affected the long term development of World History?
