Welcome to Open House Miss Philyaw and Ms. Lynn’s Faine Head Start Preschool Class 2011-2012

Welcome Parents and Families! We are so very glad to see you here today and we are very excited to start a new school year with your child! Our goals for Open House: – To help parents and families understand the work their child will be doing throughout the school year. – To explain the expectations of children. – To share information about how parents can support their child’s learning.

Curriculum Goals: What will my child learn in preschool? The students will study letters, letter sounds, colors, shapes, social skills, listening, self regulation, music, nutrition, art, fine motor skills, large motor skills, science, social studies, etc. during the school year. We include all of these subjects by teaching in themes. (such as fall, family, transportation, etc.)

Curriculum Goals: What will my child learn in preschool? Our overall curriculum plans and goals are stated in the Head Start Outcomes Framework and explained a little more detailed in the Parent Curriculum. I have provided you a with a copy of the Parent Curriculum in your child’s student handbook.

Curriculum Goals What will my child learn in preschool? We use Creative Curriculum, IMIL, Grow With Me, and PBL, Picturing America, Saxon Early Learning There are lots of ways that you as families can continue the learning process at home, such as reading together, pointing out shapes and colors at the store, etc.

A Day in the Life of a Preschooler : What will my child do at school each day? You can see our daily schedule to the right and outside of the door. – Language Arts – Choice Time – Large Group – Choice Time – P.E. – Music – Story Time – Rest Time – Etc.

Let’s Do an Activity Together! Children love to receive letters and notes. They also need lots of encouragement and motivation all throughout their lives. I would love for you to write an encouraging letter to your child. Your child will greatly enjoy seeing a sweet little note of praise from you! You can place their letter in your child’s cubby! We will help your child read it on his or her first day of school. This will allow them to feel more comfortable during this transition! I have provided markers, pens, paper, and envelopes for you on the tables.

Class Information Your child will be observed in class, worked with individually to master skills, and then assessed on the Head Start objectives. You will receive progress reports, report cards, assessment results, and student work samples all throughout the year. We will meet during 2 parent conferences and one more home visit to discuss your child’s progress.

Class Information I do send “At-Home” practice home with your child a few times a week. This should never be stressful nor take more than 10 min. I have provided a calendar of events during your home visit. These will be sent home monthly with your child.

Class Rules We understand that your child is learning school behavior and manners. We will work with your child in order to teach them responsible behaviors. Our Class Simply asks 2 questions: – Is that helpful? – Is that hurtful?

Class Rules – We promote positive behavior and reinforce it daily! sticker charts flower vase “Fun Friday” (movie/snack) stamps and smileys We address negative behavior IMMEDIATELY (we do not wait)! – We simply punish the behavior at hand and help the child regroup and understand why it was wrong.
