 Problem = observation, question, or problem  Observation: Running shoes degrade when exposed to weather  Question: Do mouthguards hinder athletic performance?

 Hypothesis = testable statement describing what YOU think will happen  Addition of PIB will improve the durability of an athletic shoe  Mouthguards will not hinder athletic performance PIB = Polyisobutylene PIB Uses: -Chewing gum -Medical adhesives -Fuel additives

 Experiment = Ways to test the hypothesis  Make PIB-based material and test the properties  Study to test athletic ability when using and not using a mouthguard

 Control group?  Experimental group?  Independent variable?  Dependent variable? Wearing or not wearing the mouthguard Vertical jump performance Group not wearing the mouthguard Group wearing the mouthguard

 Conclusion = Statement discussing if hypothesis is correct or not  Determined that vertical jump was similar for both control and experimental group  Results lead to the hypothesis being correct!
