Scientific Method

1) Observe to gather data 2) Form hypothesis – testable statement based on those observations 3) Experiment (to test hypothesis) and collect data

 Types of Data - Quantitative – uses amount to describe Ex. - Qualitative – descriptive without using amount Ex.  Parts of the Experiment  Variables – condition that can have more than one value - Independent variable – variable that’s changed in experiment (x axis) - Dependent variable – changes as a result of a change in independent variable (y axis)

- Control group – part of experiment where independent variable isn’t applied - Something to compare to - Experimental group – parts of experiment where independent variable is applied - Constants – conditions that are the same both groups 4) Conclusion that does or doesn’t support hypothesis

Sample Experiment  Observation: Dissolving sugar in iced tea seems to take longer than dissolving it in hot tea while its being brewed.  Hypothesis:  Experiment: Equipment Needed -

 Independent Variable –  Dependent Variable –  Control Group –  Constants -
