5.  Being prepared for class means having your necessary materials. (Pencil, Notebooks, Texts, Novels, etc.)

6.  Being respectful means you show tolerance of me, your classmates, and your teammates.  In this classroom, you will learn to praise each other!!  No other treatment will be tolerated!

7.  In this class, you will have no choice but to be Involved-in cooperative learning, class discussions, projects, and work!! Participate in all class discussions, projects, and work. Be productive!

8.  I, your classmates, and your teammates should be able to depend on you to be an active team member and to always be an active listener.  Also, this is YOUR education. You should depend on yourself to make things happen and to get the most out of it.

9. Reading is the key to knowledge. “The more you read, the more things you know.” ALWAYS have a book to read in this class!! You will be completing a book form for this ongoing assignment this year. YES!!! This SHALL be A GRADE!!!

12. 1. What is the most important thing you have learned in this classroom so far today?

13.  Journal Work begins the minute you walk into class. You will have the first five minutes of class to write the date, copy the question, and write the answer to the assignment. When you have completed the assignment you are to sit quietly at your seat until you have further instructions from me. You will always get your paper from the journal box at the beginning of class the next day.  “Journals” are worth five points each day. Every ten days, the grades on your journal will be combined into a total grade worth 50 points. Journal work is set up to have you on time and on task within one minute of the class start time.  Some people might say that if you are absent, you shouldn’t get any points. However, I am willing to meet you half way. That means you can earn half the points, or 2 1/2 of the five. I will round in your favor and give you three points. You may either write the word “absent” and the date, or copy the date, question, and answer from someone else’s paper, since journal work questions often end up on tests. Either way you can earn up to three points.

14.  How many points will your “Journal Work” scores be worth every FOUR weeks?

15.  Late Work: Please be aware of the student handbook’s policy and procedures regarding discipline referrals for not turning in homework. Generally, I do not accept late work except under extenuating circumstances. Late work will cost you 10 points off the final grade on the assignment.  NOTE: If the assignment is a project in which there has already been a large amount of time given, the work WILL NOT be accepted!

16. 1. I will give you the question, which has multiple possible responses or solutions, and 15 seconds think time. 2. You will take turns stating your responses or solutions. Teams will do MULTIPLE ROUNDS until I call “Time’s Up.”

18.  You will have one day to make up work missed for each day of school missed. A grade will only be recorded after an excuse has been confirmed in Infinite Campus. If it is unexcused, your grade will be a zero.  In the front of the room is a board marked “Make Up Work.” A calendar which contains each days’ activities can be found there.  On the table, you will also find a folder containing your period and two trays. Look in the tray for any worksheets or handouts that are important. Then, turn your make up work into the folder designated for your class.  You are responsible for reading the board, collecting the materials necessary, and turning in your work. NOTE: YOU WILL NOT BE REMINDED TO GET YOUR MAKE-UP WORK. IT IS NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY. I WAS NOT THE ONE WHO WAS ABSENT!!

19.  You will be given a hall pass sheet with 16 slots on it. That equals 4 hall passes per nine week grading period. You can use your hall pass sheet for using the bathroom, going to your locker, or anything else that may arise. Simply fill it out and bring it to me to sign. Don’t forget about the 10/10 rule: no hall pass will be signed 10 minutes after class starts or 10 minutes before class ends. And I will not sign it while I am teaching!!  Please note that once you have used all sixteen of your passes, you will no longer be allowed out of this classroom for anything. So, use them wisely. You will also not be issued a new one if you lose yours, so don’t even ask!  If you have a friend who has forgotten theirs or has lost theirs and you want to let them use one of yours as a favor, that is your prerogative. However, understand that a point will be rewarded at the end of the year for every hall pass you don’t use. Those reward points will be added to your final grade.

20.  I do have pencils for those of you who forget to bring yours to class. They are not free and they are not to leave this classroom. Therefore, if you borrow a pencil, you will be asked to leave a shoe at my desk. When you return my pencil, you can have your shoe back. If you don’t want to sit in class with one shoe off, come prepared or ask a classmate. There will be no discussion!

21.  Cheating in my class WILL NOT be tolerated. If you cheat on a test or a quiz and I catch you, your paper will be taken immediately, thrown in the garbage, and you will be given a zero. If I find that you have copied from another person or you have let another person copy off of you, I will take the final grade on both papers, divide it by two, and give you that grade. My philosophy is, “share your work, share your grade.”

22.  The ringing of the bell is my signal that class is over, not yours. Therefore, I will dismiss you, not the bell. However, you are in control of how fast dismissal happens. You must be seated in your assigned seat and you must be quiet. (Standing by your seat, near your seat, or kneeling on your seat will not be accepted.) In addition to everyone being in their assigned seats, the classroom must be neat with no trash on the floor, no books lying where they aren’t supposed to be, and desks in their original positions.

23.  Required materials for this class include a notebook with at least 4 subject dividers. You will also be required to keep a “Grammar Journal” which is separate from your notebook. We will also be doing lots of work with highlighters this year; so if you would like to have your own for class, feel free to bring those with you. Otherwise, highlighters will be provided for you. *If you are writing with ink, it must only be blue or black.  Also, the use of technology for projects, papers, and presentations will be frequent. If you will not be using your school account, you will certainly need a zip disk that is compatible with the school computers which you can save your work at home and access at school.

24.  Section I—DART Statements—Each day, write down the specified dart statements, or what your learning goals for that day are. At the end of each day, revisit them. Did you achieve the learning goals? Why or why not?  Section II—Vocabulary—You will keep two-column charts for all the vocabulary for short stories, novels, or other important words you should know by the end of the year. Those words will appear on end of week tests, nine week exams, unit exams, and QUIZZES. You should review them regularly, NIGHTLY, and weekly  Section III—Notes—A place for important notes, directions about homework, or specific page numbers, web addresses, etc where you will find information for assignments or readings.  Section IV—Handouts/Worksheets—Might be an added folder or a page protector where you can slide important handouts and worksheets that will be turned in at a later date or that you will want to keep for a reference later.  Section V—Grammar Journal—(If not a separate notebook, which is recommended), a section for taking grammar notes and doing grammar exercises where you can correct mistakes. Also, it is highly recommended to keep a folder or something with an insert in which you can keep grammar handouts, quizzes, and tests. The questions and skills that show up on these very often show up on the tests and since you can use grammar journals on tests….

25.  Writing, carving, marking, or scribbling on desks, chairs, tables, shelves or any other property in the classroom is against the handbook policy and WILL NOT be tolerated. If, at any time, you sit down at your desk and see markings on it, you are to notify the teacher immediately. If you do not report it and the next person who sits there does, it will be assumed that you did it and the proper actions will be taken against you!!
