DISCLAIMER!  This presentation is informational in nature only and is NOT at this time endorsed, supported, or under consideration by either NFD Administration, City of Noblesville or the Local 4416- Rather it is a “grassroots” effort to educate our members on a viable alternative to our current work schedule.

 There are currently 100-plus fire departments that are using the 48/96 schedule.  It is a viable option that DOES NOT affect our pay and has the potential to increase morale.  This schedule is gaining popularity and starting to move into Midwestern states.  We are proposing a one year trial of the 48/96.

WHAT DOES THE 48/96 SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE?

WHY SHOULD MANAGEMENT LIKE THE 48/96?  Better workflow and continuity as a shift works for two days in a row.  Morale increase in the members and creates a happier workforce.  Some daily routines do not need to be repeated such as shift change, thus increasing productivity.  Management can show that they are indeed forward- thinking and willing to accept and embrace change.  Departments that have switched have had reductions in sick hours used.

CONTINUED  50% reduction in employee vehicle mileage to and from work that will benefit the city in meeting EPA air pollution requirements.  50% reduction in apparatus miscellaneous trips. The 48/96 would prompt 50% less trips to the grocery store.

 This only happens every 6 to 9 Years  This is at most, 3 times in a 20 year career.  Options: If a shift was scheduled to work both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, the shift could be flip-flopped with the one before or after, depending on which shift had to work Thanksgiving.

CHRISTMAS SAMPLE

CONS Every shift is a 48 hours This disturbs a long standing routine May cause more stress with family routines initially. Both days of a weekend would be worked 9 times per year Second Day of the shift could be more demanding if a busy first shift occurred. Decrease in Morale of some members who do not want to try the 48/96

PRO  Every time you go home you have a 4- Days off  8 More full weekends off per year  Better continuity of workflow for two days in a row

PRO, CON’T  Increase in morale as seen in departments that have switched.  More quality time with family  More 4-Days - 20 more per year  8 more total days in segment vacation per year  Commuting time and distance cut in half resulting in less driving expenses and less wear and tear on vehicle.

 ENGINE 71: 2007: 1,209 runs (3.31/day) 2008: 1,492 runs (4.08/day) 2009: 1,211 runs ( 3.31/day) as of 6/30/2010: 598 runs (3.30/day)

DEPARTMENTS CURRENTLY ON 48/96 City of San Bernadino – 175 Firefighters City of Sacramento – 630 Firefighters Los Angeles County – 196 Stations City of Minneapolis – 19 Stations City of Eugene, OR – 150 FF’s, 18,000 calls/year. City of Westminster, CO – 141 FFs, 8100 runs/year

WHAT DO WE DO NOW????  If you think this proposal has merit, talk it up with your crew, families, other members, and L4416 district Rep.  If enough interest is shown, we can move towards a poll and than a vote to move forward with a trial run period of twelve months.  The trial would be contingent on approval of management.  All issues relating to the trial would be worked out by a committee and with management between now and the start of the trial.
