Civil War Causes SS5H1

Civil War Causes The Northern and Southern states were divided between three major issues: –Cultural issues: how people lived their lives –Economic issues: how people earned their money –Government issues: how people viewed laws The two biggest issues that divided the two sides were STATES RIGHTS and SLAVERY. STATES RIGHTS: the South believed states should more power than the federal (national) government. The North believed the federal government should have more power than individual states. SLAVERY: the South’s economy was based around farming, and they used slaves as free and cheap labor. The North had a more industrial (factories) economy and had no use for slavery.

Civil War Causes SLAVERY: The South’s major crop was cotton. Northerner’s felt it was cruel and inhumane, and wanted to abolish (get rid of) slavery. People who were against slavery were called abolitionists. Southerner’s felt that abolishing slavery would ruin their economy.

Civil War Causes SLAVERY – a book sparked a war UNCLE TOM’S CABIN was a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The book showed the evil’s of slavery and shocked many people who did not realize how bad slavery was. The book is considered to be a cause to starting the war because it turned so many people against slavery.

Civil War Causes John Brown was an abolitionist (What does abolitionist mean?) He led a group of rebels (including slaves) to a gun facility in Harper’s Ferry, Virginia to protest slavery. Brown refused to surrender when troops surrounded the area. He was captured, put on trial, and hanged for his involvement at Harper’s Ferry. This was related to the Civil War because it showed that people were willing to get violent to end slavery.
