2 What is Hospitality? Hospitality-Meeting the needs of guests with kindness and goodwill. Hospitality is the world’s largest industry. Think about the last time that you went to a hotel. Did you feel safe? Did you feel happy?

3 Hospitality Industry The hospitality industry provides service to people away from home. **Segments of the Hospitality Industry** 1. Food and Beverage 2. Lodging 3. Travel 4. Tourism 5. Recreation

4 Food and Beverage Foodservice Industry-Consist of businesses that prepare food and beverages for customers. Casual ($) to Fancy ($$$$) Large or small Employs over 10 million people. Ex. Quick-service restaurants, full service, street vendors, carry out and cafeterias.

5 Lodging Lodging Industry-Consist of businesses that provide overnight accommodations. Lodging- a place to sleep for one or more nights. Expensive ($$$$) to Budget friendly ($$) Ex. Hotels, motels, inns, bed and breakfasts, hostels, campsites.

6 Travel Travel Industry-consist of businesses that physically move travelers from one place to another. Vacation or Business Trips Trip length varies Ex. Car rentals, buses, trains, airplanes, cruise ships, travel agents.

Vacation vs. Business Out of pocket expense Businesses pay for travel Travel for pleasure Business meetings Visit historical sites Conferences Visit natural wonders Events Honeymoons Sales meetings Relaxing getaways Conventions Family trips Sports teams that travel Travel for hobbies Ex. Fishing, mountain biking.

8 Tourism Tourism Industry-consist of businesses that organize and promote travel for business, leisure and other purposes. Helps businesses plan for various types of trips. Planners can also put together a travel package which may include trip arrangements and other aspects of hospitality. Ex. Tour companies, tourism offices, convention and visitors bureaus.

9 Recreation Recreation industry-consist of providers of activities for rest, relaxation and enjoyment.  Entertainment-shows, concerts and movies.  Spectator sports-sports you watch.  Participatory sports-sports that you take part in yourself such as skiing or golf.  Attractions-special interest to visit such as amusement parks, zoos and fairs.

10 Business Formats Single-unit business-only one establishment that is not connected legally or by contract to any other business. Multiple-unit business-has two or more establishments.  Chain- a business that has more than one establishment under the same name and same ownership. Ex. Olive Garden  Franchise- the right to do business using the brand and products of another business. Ex. McDonalds

11 Professional Associations Professional Association-a group of people organized to improve themselves, their profession and their industry. Over 50 professional associations within the hospitality industry.  Examples:  NRA (National Restaurant Association)  AH&LA (American Hotel and Lodging Association)  U.S. Travel Association

12 Professional Associations Five Areas of Professional Associations:  Professional Development-the process of continuing your education in your profession after leaving school.  Networking-process of meeting people in your profession.  Public Relations-Providing information about the industry to the general public.  Government Relations-Informing local, state or national governments about the issues that are important to the profession.  Standards and ethics-developing standards and code of ethics for the practice of their profession.
