10 The Corrupt Bargain In 1824, Andrew Jackson wins popular but not electoral vote John Quincy Adams elected president by House of Representatives with Henry Clay’s support Jacksonians claim John Q. Adams and H. Clay have struck a “corrupt bargain”

11 Jacksonian Democracy Led by Andrew Jackson, and followers of Jackson’s beliefs The political party was know as the Democratic- Republicans Things that they believed in: 1. Voting rights for all white men (certain requirements had been dropped) 2. Manifest Destiny- settling the American West, from sea to sea 3. Spoils system- placing supporters in appointed positions, rotation of appointed people as well.

12 Indian Removal Act of 1830 Whites want to displace or assimilate Native Americans Jackson: only solution is to move Native Americans off their land - thinks assimilation cannot work - too many troops needed to keep whites out of native lands Congress passes Indian Removal Act of 1830 - funds treaties that force Native Americans west Jackson pressures some tribes to move, forcibly removes others
