Catalyst Questions…Let’s review some things  How should our notes be set up?  What is on even pages?  What are the different sections of our binders?  What are ways to be successful in this class?

Quick Quiz #2

Characteristics of Life

What separates us from non-living things?

Objective:  SWBAT to differentiate between the eight characteristics of life.

Today I’ll provide the notes… What is the goal of all organs? To maintain life!!

1. Maintaining Boundaries  Separates the outside from the inside  What do our cells have?  Cell membrane!  What do our bodies have?  Have skin! AKA integumentary system

2. Movement  Promoted by the muscular system.  Aided by the….  Skeletal system!  How??  The muscles pull on the bones to create movement!  Also, when blood, foodstuff, urine, and lymph are propelled through internal organs in the cardiovascular, digestive, and urinary systems

3. Responsiveness  Ability to sense changes (called stimuli) in the environment and then react to them.  The BRAIN STEM generally controls the NERVOUS system which bears most of responsibility for responsiveness.

4. Digestion  Is the process of breaking down ingested FOOD into simple MOLECULES that can be absorbed into the BLOOD for delivery to all body cells by the CARDIOVASCULAR system.

5. Metabolism  Is a broad term that refers to all CHEMICAL REACTIONS that occur within the body cells.  Who can think of an example?  Proteins from amino acids !  What does it produce?  ATP molecules  Depends on DIGESTIVE and RESPIRATORY systems, and CARDIOVASCULAR distributes throughout the body  It is regulated by HORMONES and secreted by the glands of our ENDOCRINE system

6. Excretion  Removing WASTES from the body.  Our URNIARY and DIGESTIVE systems participate in excretion and so does our INTEGUMENTARY system (through sweat!)

7. Reproduction  Is the production of OFFSPRING  The difference between mitosis and meiosis?  Mitosis produces more cells for use in functions the body = somatic cells  Meiosis begins organismal reproduction = gametes (the egg and sperm)  The REPRODUCTIVE system is perfectly regulated by the ENDOCRINE system which produces hormones

8. GROWTH!!  An increase in SIZE  Cell-constructing activities have to be occurring at a FASTER rate then cell-destroying ones.

Practice by answering the questions…
