Global Sustainability and Prosperity Can sustainability and prosperity be balanced in a globalizing world?

Where do you stand? We have spent the last couple of weeks looking at the ideas of globalization and prosperity and can it be sustainable for all peoples. How would you answer the question: Can Sustainability and prosperity be balanced in a globalizing world?

What does sustainability mean for people, the economy, and the environment

Stewardship and Spirituality Many times what we believe in life, whether that be god or some other supreme being or life-form, it is this belief that will push us to the decisions that we need to make. Look at the quote on the next page, and write down an answer to the question that follows.

Stewardship and Spirituality The core values that underpin sustainable development --- interdependence, empathy, equity, personal responsibility and intergenerational justice – are the only foundation upon which any viable vision of a better world can possibly be constructed. What do the core values listed by Jon Porritt have to do with spirituality and stewardship?

Urbanization With cities growing larger by the day, the problems that arise from the growth can include: – Garbage – Transportation – Air quality How can the larger cities in the world, which are usually in less developed countries, cope with these problems?

Canada and its Regions This year you are not asked to memorize the regions, but what we are going to do is look at the regions and what they each offer Canada and its effects on the environment. As Canadians we have to really be looking at the long term prosperity of a resource before we start taking it from the ground.

Conservatism This is a worry when it comes to resources that we have in Canada. In some ways the federal government is responsible to make sure that resources are conserved. – Canada’s East Coast and the Cod Fisheries – Forests in BC and Ontario We also have to be aware of native rights and agreements that we allow them to have rights beyond that of the average worker.

There is also Differences Regions in Canada also have problems. What we have here in Alberta is vastly different than what is around in Quebec, PEI, or Nova Scotia. Tax money that is collected by the federal government is used to help provinces be equal. Equalization payments allow “have” provinces to become equal with “have not” provinces.

Alberta Example The National Energy Policy (NEP) was a federal government policy to help lower prices for oil and gas. Basically the program was to take advantage of Alberta’s oil resources to make Canada a stronger country. The problems is that it Canadian businesses did not buy into the idea, and went elsewhere, hurting the Canadian oil industry.

Genuine Progress Indicator This is a process to look at all the regions in Canada to see which is the best. One thing that these people know to look for is not only economic, but socially and politically as well. Another problem would be factor that are used, are they common or are there problems with different regions?

Who is responsible to make sure everyone is take care of? That is a great questions and one that is hard to answer because of out position in the world. As a “have” country, how responsible are we to take care of the world?

Food for all Look, we need to feed the world, and that comes down to the farmers. We have become better farmers and using less land and getting more out of the land that we used to. Bigger farms with more land, more agriculture, more pesticides, and a need to produce puts a stress on the farm.

We are not the only country China and Brazil are also going through this process. Brazil grows a lot of food for China (soy beans) and by de-forestation, Brazil is more than happy to feed China. What is China doing with its land, making roads, cities, factories, and other things.

OECD The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development is an organization (which Canada is a part of) that will work together to meet the challenges of globalization. These countries want to help governments achieve sustainable economic growth … while maintaining financial stability.
