2. Class Description The history of the whole world in all places in all times… as best we can Not just about dates and people: –cause and effect –why the world is the way it is –connects to every subject

3. Class Goals Prepare for future Social Studies courses Overall framework of global history and cultures Appreciate world history!

4. Class Outline Early Civilizations (5 days) Greeks and Romans (7 days) Asian and African Civilizations (11 days) Middle Ages and the Renaissance Era (12 days) Americas (6 days) Absolute Monarchies and Enlightenment (4 days) French Revolution and the 1800s (10 days) World War One and the Interwar Period (6 days) WWII and the Cold War (10 days)

5. Tests All assessments will be announced beforehand and written on the board Given about every two weeks Mostly multiple choice (25-35 questions) Short answer (2-4 questions)

6. Quizzes Given about every 3-5 class days Multiple choice (10-20) Short answer (2 questions) Quiz corrections: You will be able to reflect on your mistakes and get extra credit (details later)

7. Assignments Examples of assignments: – Homework : worksheets, textbook reading, finding articles, essays – Classwork : worksheets, writing, activities, matching, warm-ups/tickets out – Glossary : Ongoing assignment of keeping track of class vocabulary – Participation : coming to class with questions, self-advocating, and able to answer questions – Extra credit : word of the day, quiz corrections

8. Warm-ups/Tickets out the Door Almost every day we will have a warm-up or a ticket out, or both Warm-ups will be completed in a warm- up section in your notebook (I will check as I walk around) Tickets Out will be completed on 3X5 cards and handed in at the end of class Cumulative grades will be entered into the gradebook periodically

9. Tools Three ring binder (not spiral): just for this class College ruled paper Writing utensil (if not- pencil of shame) 3X5 cards: for ticket out and flash cards 1 Ream of paper (keep at home): –you will need to print assignments/notes from home –Get a printing buddy or you owe me double paper

10. Being Prepared for Class When the bell rings, all students must be quietly sitting in their seats with their notebooks out and ready to do work Bring your own notebook, paper, pencil/pen, and textbook Have all assignments/notes printed

11. Notebooks You will need to put your class material in a binder notebook It is your responsibility to organize and date your notebook- it will be checked periodically Sections for notebook: –Warm-ups –Notes –Homework/Classwork –Quizzes –Glossary

12. Textbooks You will need to bring your textbook to class each day Before some lessons, you may be required to read a section of the textbook and be prepared for a short reading quiz Textbooks should be out and open during note taking so you can follow along and fully participate

13. Notes All notes are provided for you on my website ONLY if you do the following: –Print them out and look over them before class –Identify what concepts you know or don’t know, and come ready with three questions per day: confusions, clarifications, or extending knowledge –In class you will actively participate, ask questions, highlight your notes, and supplement it with information we talked about

14. Late Assignments The ultimate responsibility for mistakes in the gradebook is on you 10% penalty per day late with a maximum of 50% off your score If you hand in a late assignment write at the top: “Thank you for accepting this __ days late”

15. Absences Absences are your responsibility. Steps if you are going to be/were absent: 1.Plan in advance, especially if you are going to miss a quiz or test 2.Talk to another student 3.Go to the website 4.Check the tray at the back of the room 5.THEN talk to Mr. Hairgrove
