6 Canadian Self-Gov’t  1838-Lord Durham goes to Canada  Durham urged parliament to allow self- gov’t to Canada.  1867-Parliament passed British North America Act  Est. Canada as a dominion-self-governing territory owing allegiance to the British King or queen.

18 New Zealand  1770-James Cook’s expedition (1 st European to settle in New Zealand)  Whaling stations and timber drew settlers in 1790s.  Foreigners bring problems to the Maori people (original inhabitants)  Disease-caused a 50% reduction in pop. In 20 years.  firearms

19 New Zealand  An effort to provide law for the Maori and the settlers.  British naval officers and Maori chiefs conclude the:  Treaty of Waitangi in 1840-protected Maori rights, and property rights while Maori give Brits sovereignty over New Zealand.

20 New Zealand cont…  1840-1 st British settlements at Wellington and Wanganui.  Economies based on wool exports.  Gold increased New Zealand’s pop. 1852-New Zealand receives a constitution from G.B. becomes a self-governing colony 1907-New Zealand becomes a dominion.
