BOOKER T v WEB YouTube - Booker T. Washington & W.E.B Dubois
Do Now How do we choose our leaders?? What qualities should a person have for you to allow them to lead you?
Over View Both men were great leaders of the black community in the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries. Disagreed on strategies for black social and economic progress
Booker T. Washington Educator and reformer Most influential black leader of his time Teaching included: – Self Help – Racial Solidarity – Accomodation
Booker T. Washington Urged blacks to accept discrimination for the time being and concentrate on elevating themselves through hard work and material prosperity Believed in education of the crafts, industrial and farming skills Believed in the virtues of patience, enterprise, and thrift He believed that these qualities would win the respect of the whites and lead to African Americans being fully accepted as citizens
W.E.B Dubois African American Intellectual, Scholar, and Political Thinker Believed that Washingtons strategy would only perpetuate white oppression Advocated: – Political Action – Civil Rights Agenda
Dubois called for the creration of a small group of college educated blacks that he called the Talented Tenth The Negro Race, like all races, is going to be saved by its exceptional men. The problem of education then, among Negroes, must first of all deal with the "Talented Tenth." It is the problem of developing the best of this race that they may guide the Mass away from the contamination and death of the worst."
Two Sides Washington /Dubois dispute polarized African American leaders into two groups: – The conservative followers of Washington – The radical followers of Dubois
Results of each Dubois philosophy of agitation and protest was reflected in the Civil Rights struggle of the 1950s and 60s Washingtons beliefs today are more associated with the self help/colorblind/Republican/ Clearance Thomas? Thomas Sowell wing of the black community.
