1 Early Civil Rights Campaigns
Civil Rights are the rights that give you freedom and make you equal to other citizens. Lesson starter: Write down some examples of what you think are Civil Rights.

2 Examples The right to vote The right to a good education
The right to a decent job The right to equal wages The right not to be discriminated against Etc.

3 This will allow them to be treated as equals with White Americans.
The Problem: Black Americans are not being treated as equal to White Americans Solution 2 Black people should not have to educate themselves to be thought of as equal. White Americans must give Blacks equal rights straight away. Or Blacks should protest. Solution 1 Black people should try and become as educated and well trained as White people. This will allow them to be treated as equals with White Americans. Solution 3 Black people should leave America and return to Africa where they can set up their own country and enjoy freedom. Black people should not have to be ashamed of their race.

4 Solution 1 Booker T Washington
Believed education of Black Americans was the key to achieving equality ‘Show the white man you can work hard and they will see that the Black man is a respectable person’

5 Solution 2 W.E.B. Du Bois Believed in protesting for Civil Rights
Did not think Blacks should have to prove anything to white people ‘until we get these rights we will never cease to protest’

6 Solution 3 Marcus Garvey
Blacks should go back to Africa and run their own country He even set up his own travel line ‘The Black Star Line’ to take people back to Africa ‘Why should we ask to be given Civil Rights? Black is beautiful!’
