Two new module options developed for inclusion on the MA in Professional Development will run again in 2008-09 The modules are also offered as stand alone 30 credit M level CPD awards The modules are specifically designed for HE in FE staff Modules will be free for staff teaching within the Consortium and there is funding for some remission from teaching Developing HE tutors within the FE system

3. Weds 30 April 2008 Why new Masters Level modules? Background: FE provides ‘10% of HE and teach one in nine of the undergraduate population’ (Foster, 2005) Almost 94,900 students (f/t and p/t equally) enrolled on HE programmes at 260 FE colleges in 2005/06 (QAA) Of students enrolled on HE in FE programmes in 2005/06: 19% studied education Target of 50% 18-30 year olds in HE by year 2010 – much of extra activity will be in FE Developing HE tutors within the FE system

Aims: To address findings from QAA and Ofsted To support development of centres for HE excellence in FE colleges To provide support for action research and scholarly activity To disseminate Consortium research findings To support the professionalisation of the post-compulsory teaching workforce Developing HE tutors within the FE system

Weds 30 April 2008 QAA 2006 review of HE delivered in FE 10% of reviews resulted in one or more judgements of failing quality re learning opportunities Development of students’ intellectual, cognitive skills presents a significant challenge Little time for staff to keep abreast of subject developments, difficult to keep up to date Colleges have a major challenge to raise profile and understanding of HE internally The modules address review issues Developing HE tutors within the FE system

Weds 30 April 2008 Ofsted : key issues from inspection of ITT for FE 2005-06 (NAB) Quality of the practice element often inadequate Problems with mentoring Insufficient development of subject specific teaching skills Problems with minimum core Trainees’ individual needs often unmet The modules address Ofsted issues Developing HE tutors within the FE system

7. Weds 30 April 2008 Centres for HE excellence in FE colleges FE reform includes: Development of centres for HE excellence in FE colleges – high priority for HEFCE funding Discontinuation of HE provision where colleges are not delivering to standard Evidence based CPD at M level for FE staff delivering HE will support colleges wishing to achieve centre for HE excellence status Developing HE tutors within the FE system

8. Weds 30 April 2008 Research and scholarly activity It is expected that an HE teacher will demonstrate: Commitment to incorporating the process and outcomes of relevant research, scholarship and/or professional practice It is expected that an HE teacher will be able to: Integrate scholarship, research and professional activities with teaching and supporting learning (HEA Professional Standards) The modules support these objectives Developing HE tutors within the FE system

Weds 30 April 2008 Consortium for PCET research findings Research findings support the effective development of evidence-based HE in FE practice in relation to: Retention and achievement Equality and diversity Communities of practice The observation of teaching The modules address these issues Developing HE tutors within the FE system

10. Weds 30 April 2008 The professionalisation of the post- compulsory teaching workforce The modules support fulfilment of the annual 30 hour CPD requirement for teachers in the sector. The two modules are: Delivering HE in FE Developing evidence-based PCET teacher education practice Developing HE tutors within the FE system

11. Weds 30 April 2008 ‘Delivering HE in FE’ This module addresses: The role of FE colleges in delivering HE – widening participation and learning Approaches to the assessment of HE delivered in FE Creating an HE ethos (including the development of higher level skills, and undertaking research and scholarly activity) Developing HE tutors within the FE system

12. Weds 30 April 2008 ‘Developing evidence-based PCET teacher education practice’ This module addresses: Teacher education and teacher educators in the LSS – research findings The place of theory in ITT How people learn (including a look at the ‘tall tales’ of learning ) Enhancing equality and diversity Developing HE tutors within the FE system

13.
