He Claimed the land for Portugal and named it the "Island of the True Cross.“ Cabral stayed in Brazil for 10 days then continued on his way to India.

5. Expedition (continued) He encountered storms, shipwrecks, and fighting along his expedition to India. After this expedition, King Manuel appointed Vasco da Gama to head the next expedition in 1502. In 1502 Cabral retired. Since his voyage Pedro was having some problems, such as recurrent fever and a tremor. He withdrew in 1509.

6. Pedro Álvares Cabral ( Death) He spent his remaining years in Santarém, Portugal. In 1520 Pedro Cabral Died. Cabral died of unspecified causes. He was buried in a monastery in Santarém, Portugal. In 1848 his tomb was identified by the Brazilian historian, Francisco Adolfo Varnhagen.
